Select one of the membership classes below to find out what credentials are required to become a member of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).

Membership Classes

  • Active

    • Be a licensed physician in good standing in family medicine
    • Pay the annual membership fees; renewal is due on July 1st
    • Fulfil continuing professional development (CPD) requirements:
      • Must submit 250 credits in each five-year cycle, at least 125 of which must be Mainpro+® certified credits from any activity category (Group Learning, Self-Learning, or Assessment); must submit 25 credits (certified or non-certified in any category) each cycle year

    Apply for Active membership

  • Affiliate Specialist

    • Be a licensed physician in good standing, in a specialty other than family medicine
    • Hold Certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (Royal College) or another certifying body recognized by the CFPC
    • Pay annual fees; renewal is on July 1st
    • Be a member of the national College; Chapter membership is optional
    • Fulfil CPD requirements:
      • Must submit 250 credits in each five-year cycle, at least 125 of which must be Mainpro+ certified credits from any activity category (Group Learning, Self-Learning, or Assessment) Must submit 25 credits (certified or non-certified in any category) each cycle year

      OR

      • Must submit transcripts from recognized certifying body (e.g., Royal College) in lieu of manual entry of credits

    Apply for Affiliate Specialist membership*

    *Applicants must submit documentation to confirm enrolment and certification with the recognized specialty body to the Member Care Centre at membership@cfpc.ca.

  • Out-of-Country

    • Be a licensed physician in good standing in family medicine
    • Practise or reside outside of Canada
    • Pay annual fees; renewal is on July 1st
    • Be a member of the national College; Chapter membership optional
    • Fulfil CPD requirements:
      • Must submit 250 credits in each five-year cycle, at least 125 of which must be Mainpro+ certified credits from any activity category (Group Learning, Self-Learning, or Assessment) Must submit 25 credits (certified or non-certified in any category) each cycle year

      OR

      • Must submit credits accumulated outside of Canada

    Apply for Out-of-Country membership*

    *Applicants must submit proof of their medical licence in good standing to the Member Care Centre at membership@cfpc.ca.

  • Resident

    • Be a resident physician enrolled in an approved postgraduate training program in family medicine in Canada, Australia, Ireland, the United States, or the United Kingdom

    OR

    • Be a physician who is a member of the CFPC and is now enrolled as a resident in an approved postgraduate training program in a medical discipline other than family medicine
    • Pay annual fees; renewal is on July 1st
    • Be a member of both the national College and a Chapter
    • Fulfil CPD requirements:
      • Enrol in a temporary five-year cycle (but submission of credits is not required)
      • Enrol in a new Active five-year cycle upon completion of the residency program; members may carry over a maximum of 40 certified credits (if documented during residency)
      • Receive an automatic Active membership upgrade upon completion of the residency program

    Details about resident membership*

    *Canadian residents are automatically enrolled with the CFPC by the university every year, between July and October. Residents in Australia, Ireland, the United States, or the United Kingdom must contact the Member Care Centre at membership@cfpc.ca to review eligibility for enrolment.

  • International Medical Graduate (IMG)

    • Enrolled in a provincial ministry of health- and/or university-approved assessment/training program leading to obtaining a licence to practise
    • Pay annual fees; renewal is on July 1st
    • Fulfil CPD requirements:
      • Enrol in a temporary five-year cycle (but submission of credits is not required)
      • Enrol in a new Active five-year cycle upon completion of the training program; members may carry over a maximum of 40 certified credits (if documented during training)
      • Receive an automatic Active membership upgrade upon completion of the training program
    • IMG members must inform the CFPC if they are not able obtain a licence

    To apply for IMG membership, applicants should contact the Member Care Centre at membership@cfpc.ca to review eligibility for enrolment within this class. Proof of enrolment in assessment/training programs is required.

  • Student

    • Be enrolled in a Canadian university faculty of medicine undergraduate program leading to the MD degree
    • Pay no annual fee; renewal in July of each year
    • Member of both the national College and a Chapter
    • CPD requirements are not applicable

    Apply for Student membership

  • Associate

    • Be an individual or health professional other than a family physician
    • Work with family physicians in clinical practice or academic department of family medicine
    • Pay annual fee; renewal is on July 1st
    • Be a member of the national College; Chapter membership is optional
    • CPD requirements are not applicable

    Apply for Associate membership* 

    *Applicants must provide a valid referee when submitting an application. The CFPC will provide the named referee with a form for completion. The referee must be a member who is in good standing with the CPFC and has volunteered to act as a referee for the applicant.

  • Retired

    • Be a physician who is no longer actively engaged in providing medical care to patients nor actively involved in any other medical or medically-related field
    • Must be an existing CFPC member
    • Pay no annual fee; renewal is on July 1st
    • Be a member of both the national College and a Chapter
    • CPD requirements are not applicable; however, may request to submit credits voluntarily

    Members who want their status updated to Retired should send an email request to membership@cfpc.ca with the official date of retirement.

  • Senior

    • Be a licensed physician in good standing
    • Be aged 65 or older
    • Must be an Active member in good standing for at least 10 consecutive years
    • Be actively engaged in providing medical care to patients

    OR

    • Be active in another medical or medically-related field
    • Pay annual fees; renewal is on July 1st
    • Be a member of both the national College and a Chapter
    • Fulfil CPD requirements:
      • Must submit 250 credits in each five-year cycle, at least 125 of which must be Mainpro+ certified credits from any activity category (Group Learning, Self-Learning, or Assessment) Must submit 25 credits (certified or non-certified in any category) each cycle year

    Active members who meet the above requirements will automatically be updated to Senior status at renewal.
